And Why it Matters. . . .
The latest article I stumbled across lets you in on a number of secrets that can protect you from some potentially dangerous situations and might even save your life. I know we all respect the education, training and commitment that it takes to become a physician, but we need to remember that doctors are human, and whether we like it or not, all humans are fallible.
The biggest “take-aways” for me are listed below. But before I get to that, I want you to know, in working with people in pain, I have found that all-natural, drug-free methods have the most profound impact on the body and bring long-term relief. Below are a few we routinely use and recommend in our practice.
Secrets Everyone Should Know
To Know Which Doctor is Good: Ask hospital employees - they have first-hand experience working with physicians and if they don't work directly for the doctor, they are independent and free from conflict of interest.
Ask About Their Complication Rate: if they don't have one, they are hiding something.
Practically ALL Surgeons have an Inherent Conflict of Interest: That's because they are paid approximately 10x more to perform surgery than treat or manage your problem conservatively.
ALWAYS Check to Make Certain your Physician is BOARD CERTIFIED in his or her Specialty: You wouldn't fly on a plan with a pilot that is not FAA Certified.
Some Doctors Hire Practice Management Consultants to Help Capture more Revenue: This includes selling things like durable medical equipment or providing "in-house" physical therapy. Every time a doctor does this he or she becomes more financially conflicted. Shop around for better rates and services. Don't feel like you HAVE to use services provided at their facility. You have a choice.
Some Problems DON'T FIX WELL with Surgery, like many causes of BACK PAIN: In a 2011 study to determine objective outcomes for people 2 years after lumbar fusions the results showed only 26% of post-surgical patients had returned to work AS COMPARED to 67% of non-surgically treated patients. Additionally, daily opioid use in the post-surgical patients had incrased by 41%. Conservative treatment is ALWAYS the best first course of action! (Article Abstract)
Here are a couple of articles that highlight the experience of two people that underwent back surgery. In addition, usual outcome, risk and complication information is shared.
Surgeons Like to Operate: Enough said.
About 25% of Surgeries are Unnecessary: But hospital administrators put pressure on doctors to generate more revenue by performing more procedures.
