What is Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie's disease is an issue in the penis caused by scar tissue, or micro-plaque, that forms inside the penis. It may cause a bent, instead of straight, erect penis. Most men with Peyronie's disease can still engage in sexual intercourse. However, it can cause pain (for both the male and his partner) and even result in erectile dysfunction.
Are There Treatable Options For Peyronie's Disease?
There are several ways Peyronie's can be treated, but efficacy research is limited for oral medications and injections. But don't despair! Read on to learn more about your options.
First Up, Oral Medications
There are multiple oral medications available, but effectiveness is limited. Often oral medication will be combined with another treatment.
Injections for Peyronie's Disease
Multiple injections, over the course of several months, are inserted directly into the penis to reduce scar tissue. Again, effectiveness is limited.
Is Surgery An Option
Surgery may be recommended if the curvature or pain is severe; typically, surgeons will require the person to have had the issue for at least a year and will wait to do the surgery until the degree of curvature has stabilized; downtime after surgery is usually 4-8 weeks of restricted activity.
Suturing the unaffected side: suturing the longer side of the penis will result in straightening, although this is often limited to less severe curvatures and may result in penile shortening; this procedure may also cause erectile dysfunction
Incision or excision and grafting: one or more cuts are made in the scar tissue, allowing the sheath to stretch out and the penis to straighten; a piece of tissue (graft) is often sewn into place to cover the holes in the tunica albuginea; usually used in more severe cases of curvature and is more likely than suturing to result in erectile dysfunction
Penile implants: surgically inserted penile implants replace the spongy tissue that fills with blood during an erection
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, commercially known as GAINSWave, uses high frequency acoustic wave therapy that, when applied to the male genitals, breaks up the micro-plaque in existing vessels and stimulates the growth of new blood vessels; no known side-effects, increases blood flow to penis
