Dangers of OTC Pain Medication
Happens all the time. . .I know I used to be guilty of it. You have a headache, a little ache or pain and you pop a couple of ibuprofen. It’s over the counter (OTC) – it’s harmless, maybe even helpful. I would even take it prophylactically, before a hike or exercise, just to ward off the nagging knee or hip pain that might follow. But unfortunately for me, I learned of the side effects too late and now I have permanent hearing loss that started in my 30s. What you say???? Hearing loss???? From Ibuprofen????
A study posted in the American Journal of Advanced Epidemiology was recently conducted that found women who regularly take Advil, Motrin, Tylenol or other painkillers that contain ibuprofen or acetaminophen, could be putting themselves at an increased risk of hearing loss, especially if they are under the age of 50. Approximately 60,000 women over a period of 14 years were followed. One quarter of those who took ibuprofen and acetaminophen several times a week reported decreases in hearing.
Men are at risk as well. Researchers from Harvard University, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Vanderbilt University and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary studied data taken from nearly 27,000 men between the ages of 40 and74. The results showed men with regular use of OTC pain relievers (at least twice a week) had higher rates of hearing loss than non-users or only occasional use. The strongest associations were seen in men younger than age 50.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. A recent article on MSN.com highlights other times Ibuprofen may be harmful. For instances, in pregnancy, if you have a heart condition, if you have gastrointestinal issues, if you are on blood thinners, if you have arthritis, if you have a urinary tract infection or if you take it, like I used to, before a vigorous workout. In these instances Ibuprofen can be downright dangerous.
